Blindly Following Traditions

  watch from 1:40 to 1:50

The story the lottery and the movie king Kong both share the same theme in which it is dangerous to blindly follow traditions. The main danger of blindly following traditions is that it is a loss of a human life and both these stories usually sacrifice people in the most painful manner. In the story the lottery the sacrifice involves the person who was picked to get stoned to death. In the movie king Kong the person is tied on a post while wearing a necklace, indicating that he/she was the sacrifice, and then King Kong would come and take the person and eat them alive. This is very depressing as these people are killed while still conscious, and the pain they will be experiencing will be tremendous. If these inhuman traditions go on then these two communities will soon have many of their own dead and no one would be able to keep a long-lasting relationship. In the story this is shown that even though Tessie Hutchinson had appeared to be very likeable in the end she was just another sacrifice who had been killed by the people who she called, friends. In the movie when King Kong’s lair was shown there appeared to be an uncountable number of human bones with the special necklace on them. This shows that all the people in the community are treated like dirt and that people’s own friends would be killed. The people in the communities would soon start to get desensitized to their own being murdered and the people would be more interested in the killing than the tradition itself and would go to great lengths to achieve their goal. In the lottery while Tessie was being stoned her own family was also participating. This shows that they would even kill their own mother to follow traditions. In the movie the tribe was seen putting random people such as trespassers onto the pole and they would even sneak on to the trespassers boat to obtain the right sacrifice. People that are exposed to horrific sights would soon start to reflect this in their actions. The story and the movie share the same theme in which blindly following traditions will lead to dangerous results. Although these people think human sacrifices are beneficial to them in the end of the day these ordinary people are no different form serial killers.
